Lake Bunyonyi, also known as the “Place of Many Little Birds,” is a captivating freshwater lake in south-western Uganda. Here are some fascinating details about it:

Geography and Formation:

Lake Bunyonyi lies between the districts of Kisoro and Kabale, close to the border with Rwanda.

It’s situated at an elevation of 1,962 meters (6,437 feet) above sea level.

The lake was formed approximately 18,000 years ago due to a volcanic eruption that blocked a valley in the Ruchiga mountains.

Its current outlet is a small stream near Muko, which flows into the Ruvuma swamp and eventually connects to Lake Mutanda.

Size and Depth:

Lake Bunyonyi stretches about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) in length and is approximately 7 kilometers (1.35 miles) wide.

Scientific literature cites a maximum depth of 40 meters (130 feet), but local legends suggest it could be much deeper—around 900 meters (3,000 feet), potentially making it the second-deepest lake in Africa12.

The lake’s shores are surrounded by steep terraced hills, creating a picturesque landscape.

Islands:

Lake Bunyonyi boasts 29 islands, each with its unique charm.

Notable islands include:

Akampene (Punishment Island): Historically, unmarried pregnant girls were left here to die of hunger or while attempting to swim to the mainland. The practice was eventually abandoned.

Bwama and Njuyeera (Sharp’s Island): English missionary Leonard Sharp established a leprosy treatment center on Bwama Island in the early 20th century. Whether you’re interested in birdwatching, exploring the islands, or simply soaking in the serene beauty, Lake Bunyonyi is a magical spot waiting to be discovered!
